Abstract:
This paper describes two teaching tools for the interactive study of the composition of perpendicular harmonic oscillations. With the first tool, made with Excel spreadsheets, we can simulate the composition of perpendicular harmonic oscillations of the same frequency. With the second tool, developed with Mathcad, we can simulate the composition of perpendicular harmonic oscillations of different frequencies highlighting Lissajoux figures. With both tools, the amplitude of the resultant oscillation can be calculated according to the amplitudes of the two oscillations and the trajectory of the oscillator can be viewed. With a rapid feedback to data change, the position and velocity of the oscillator can be determined from the input data at any time. The classroom use of these two tools helps students to understand more easily the oscillatory processes and clarify the concepts of angular frequency, amplitude and phase angle. A comparison between the tools described allows an emphasis on the combined use of Excel and Mathcad programs in Physics lessons.
