Abstract:
Introduction Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder. Most patients suffering from this disorder can be treated successfully with antiepileptic drugs, but it is estimated that on average one third of the patients have medically refractory epilepsy. For this patients the surgical intervention is the best option. Stereo EEG (SEEG) is the golden standard in identifying the seizure onset zone (SOZ) and mapping the eloquent cortex. Method and Patients Twenty patients which suffered from intractable epilepsy underwent this procedure. They were evaluated by a multidisciplinary teamwork constituted by neurologists, neurosurgeons, and physicians. Results After the surgical intervention, the outcome was favorable and seizure control was obtained. Eight patients were free of disabling seizures. Focal cortical dysplasia was a common pathology found in our patients. Conclusion Focal cortical dysplasia is the most common cause of medically refractory epilepsy. Patients with seizures which are not controlled by drugs, can benefit of SEEG method. SEEG-Guided Resection is an opportunity for seizure freedom.
