Abstract:
Hydroquinone (HQ), catechol (CC), and resorcinol (RS) are dihydroxybenzene isomers often used in pesticides, medicines, cosmetics, flavoring agents, dyes, etc. They are considered as environmental pollutants by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and also by the European Union (EU) [1]. Therefore it is useful a simple and rapid method for the simultaneous determination of these 3 isomers. In this work it is proposed a novel assay for the simultaneous determination of HQ, CC and RS using an electrochemically pretreated disposable chemically modified pencil graphite electrode for the electrochemical characterization (using cyclic voltammetry ) and quantitative determination (using differential pulse voltammetry) of the 3 isomers. The detection and quantification limits obtained for the 3 izomers (from linear regression analysis) are: 0.10 × 10-6 M and 0.34 × 10-6 M for HQ, 0.31 × 10-6 M and 1.03 × 10-6 M for CC and 0.72 × 10-6 M and 2.41 × 10-6 M for RS, respectively. The proposed method was used for the determination of HQ, CC and RS in tea infusion samples. To avoid the possible effects due to matrix it was used the standard additions method. The method was used to detect the isomers in tea samples and the results obtained with the proposed method were compaired with the ones obtained by HPLC and were in good agreement. So it can be concluded that the proposed method using a disposable electrochemically pretreated can be applied succesfully for the simultaneous determination of HQ, CC and RS in tea samples.
