Abstract:
This communication provides a succinct description of the present and predicted future of Biophysics and is intended to be a “longitudinal” radiography through this field rather than an extensive approach of a limited number of subjects. The work, based on a future book with the same title, covers living matter organisation from molecular level, passing through the supramolecular one, and reaching the cellular and supracellular levels. The first part is devoted to the structure and specific interactions of the most important biomacromolecules on Earth: proteins and nucleic acids. The second part is dedicated to supramolecular structures, such as cellular membranes, and to their implications in the fundamental life processes, such as: passive and active transport, action potential generation, and propagation. The third part describes our basic knowledge on more complex systems/processes: cellular signalling, muscle contraction and relaxation, molecular motors, neural networks, and the new coming and challenging research field, optogenetics. The author is fully aware of the subjectivity of the topic choice, of the exposition limitations, as well as of the impossibility to cite many important published contributions in Biophysics.
