Abstract:
The origin and acceleration mechanism of cosmic rays with energies above GZK limit is still unknown. In order to discover the source of such ultra-high energy cosmic rays it is necessary to find a correlation between the geometry of their induced extensive air showers (EAS) and the position of the possible sources. However, the study of cosmic rays with energies greater than 1 EeV is difficult due to the very low production rate. In order to detect particles with rates smaller than 1 particle per square kilometer per century it is necessary to have a ground-based observatory with a very large detection area. The largest experiment dedicated to the detection of EAS is the Pierre Auger Observatory. While a good understanding of the detected signal is needed in order to accurately interpret the experimental data, the present study is based on a simplified model and sophisticated simulations of the polarized signals recorded at the Auger Engineering Radio Array (AERA). The simulations are produced with the CoREAS Monte Carlo based code included in the CORSIKA package. We investigate the superposition of the two main production mechanisms of radio signals simulated for EAS: geosynchrotron and Askaryan.
