Abstract:
In this study, phase transition temperatures of liquid crystals are studied through image analysis. We use statistical image analysis to compute the statistical parameters of the textures of each sample as function of temperature. The structural phases and phase transitions are fundamentally determined in this experiment based on the changes in the characteristics of textural patterns which are recorded in an image. The textures of the samples are realized with the optical polarization microscope attached to the hot stage using a Peltier cell and a high resolution camera. The phase transition temperatures of samples are deduced by the abrupt changes in the computed parameter values, and is shown to be a helpful process to identify the phase transition temperatures of the samples. This is necessary to segregate between crystal modifications and nematic E7 sub-phases.
