Abstract:
The aim of this study is to identify,in the presence of atmospheric convection, the associated bubble (plume) and chimney thermals, for different meteorological and topography conditions. For the cross-country soaring flights and for duration flights it is essential to determine where the thermal is generated, what type of thermal can be encountered (regarding the strength and duration) and how to choose the next thermal to complete the flight task [1]. The studied soaring flights were conducted in two different days: on 18th of June 2013 over Craiova area at the 54th Romanian National Gliding Championship and the second one on 12th of May 2016 over Brasov zone at the 3rd Brasov Cup. In our analysis we used the measurements from glider’s instruments (pressure, altitude, ascents and descents) and SeeYou soft for visualization of the flights to obtain their statistics. The graphs of the thermal updrafts/downdrafts in time per pilot in the mentioned days of cross-country flying helped us to analyze the structure of the thermals. In addition, a number of thermal maps were made to be correlated with the synoptic patterns and thermodynamic parameters of the radio-soundings,in order to extract the flight techniques used by glider pilots when soaring above different topographic zones. The study shows that in mountainous regions thermals are more powerful and can have larger values of the strength than the thermals generated in plain zones. An important conclusion of the study is that bubble thermal is more frequent in mountainous regions and chimney thermals at plain in the cases of atmospheric convection.
