Abstract:
We analyze the deterministic coin toss by using a rigid body modeling. Two different models are considered. One model assumes no precession, while the other one takes precession into account. Initial conditions accessible to a normal person are considered. No air resistance is taken into account. The coin lands on a soft surface (such as the palm of the hand) that allows no bouncing. The simulation is obtained with a numerical code written in C++. The output of the simulations for a number of initial conditions that may be encountered in the case of typical tosses are analyzed by computing the probabilities of heads and tails and then we further discuss on the fairness of the coin toss and any bias we might encounter.
