Abstract: We present the preliminary results for the simulation of possible PBGs (Photonic BandGap) formation in the case of a system formed by periodic or aperiodic layers from various materials and air (with or without an induced defect region). The choice of suitable combinations can lead to obtaining high quality optical amplifiers and lasing devices for designated wavelengths as well as personalized pass band optical filters. By using birefringent materials (i.e. liquid crystals) we can address and tune in real time these type of devices, for a broader application range and higher versatility.
