Linear Compton Scattering beyond the monochromatic approximation

Abstract:
We study the scattering of low intensity electromagnetic radiation on electrons, starting from the known formula of the transition amplitude of the non-linear Compton effect and taking its lowest order Taylor expansion in the intensity parameter a0. This allows us to calculate the differential cross section of the linear Compton scattering with a realistic plane wave model for the incident radiation pulse. In the next step we improve the description of the initial electron state, using a Gaussian wavepacket instead of a monoenergetic plane-wave. We present the analytic expression of the differential cross section and the numerical results for some particular scattering geometries.
