Abstract:
Ion track physics found applications from fission track dating up to researches related to cosmic rays, search for fractionally charged projectile fragments and for slow monopoles. In this contribution, the space and time evolution of the track formed along the trajectory of the projectile is analysed comparatively in different materials used for detectors: silicon, germanium, solid argon and CR-39. The transient thermal processes produced by the deposition of energy in a small region of the material in a short time interval is modeled in the frame of the thermal spike model, keeping into account the interchange of the relative importance of the ionization and nuclear energy loss during the penetration and eventually the stopping of the particle in the target.
