Abstract:
This paper describes the procedure for building an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) using solar energy as single power source for a long flight. The solar cells mounted on the glider’s wing collect solar energy both for immediate use and for storing it in the batteries for the night-time flight. The glider’s structure is very light,(balsa wood), having the wing span of 2.32 m on which 72 solar cells have been fitted. The aircraft’s mass is about 1 kg being propelled by a free-brush electric engine. The automatic pilot enables also a well-defined trajectory flight. UAVs are used in military applications but they have recently been developed considerably in civil applications. Able to sustain a long flight, this kind of glider can be used in rescuing, fire prevention, surveillance operations etc. In the future, the increase in solar cell performance and in power density in relation to the battery energy will practically lead to an unlimited flight.
