Abstract:
From all noble gases only argon is used as target and detector for neutrino experiments up to giant dimension. It has excellent properties of scintillations and ionization, is homogeneous, compact and self-shielding and is able to operate as TPC-LAr in single but also in double phase technology. We investigated phenomenological aspects of the activation of argon directly due to muons from cosmic rays, in particular nuclear capture, or due to neutrons both from cosmic rays and produced by muons. Detailed discussions on muon induced neutron yield, muon capture as well as a review of existing experimental data are presented.
