Abstract:
The good knowledge of the radioactive background and the search for materials that produce lower values for this is an important requirement for rare events experiments. We evaluate the cosmogenic effects in liquid argon as target and detector for the next experiments (protoDUNE for example), and for some materials that are commonly used as supporting components of the detector structure or shielding. Only protons (for detectors used at the surface) and neutrons are considered as inputs for nuclear reactions. A special study is considered for the possibility to produce radioactive isotopes of argon from cosmic bombardment. The evaluations are realized using COSMO [1, 2], TALYS [3], and EMPIRE-II [4] software package codes. Comparison between calculations and the available experimental data libraries is performed.
