Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to show the equivalence between heat and mechanical work by using an accurate calculus of the mechanical work. The law of conservation and transformation of energy shows that for a given amount of energy of a certain type correspond equivalent quantities of other types. In particular, between the mechanical work done and the heat obtained is a constant ratio. The method used in the experiment to prove this is a direct one. It evaluates the heat produced by friction between a band of synthetic material and the surface of a metallic cylinder.
