Abstract:
Thermal forecast and data regarding solar radiation, are key elements in determining the future or the actual conditions for cross-country flights using sailplanes, hang gliders or paragliders. These types of flying are based on updraft currents, called thermals. This paper aims to analyze solar radiation and meteorologycal conditions that lead to the formation or dissipation of the thermals. Therefore, for this study we choose flights from the three chategories of aircrafs. The flights took place on a period of summer three days in locations with different topographic terrain in South, South-West and East of Romania. The flights parameters were collected using flight recorders. The data recorded was processed with the SeeYou software. The meteorological conditions were determined using synoptic maps, meteograms, windgrams and radio-soundings vertical profiles using HYSPLI model. In addition, satellite imagery and solar radiation maps were used. Stability and instability data were correlated with the values of flotability, thermal strength and duration of a specific thermal. An important conclusion of this study is that downward short wave radiation flux, sensible heat net flux and topography influence the type and formation of thermals (chimney or plume thermals).
