Abstract:
The near real time estimation of the macroseismic intensity recently became mandatory for the insurance companies to cover part of the losses and damages that earthquakes might cause to houses, belongings, and other structures. Due to the insurance companies’ requests, a fast estimation of macroseismic intensities is made using online questionnaires and an automated interpretation method. The automatic intensity estimation code from the online feedback proposed by Wald (1999 a and b) and adopted by Ionescu and Dragoicea (2010) for the Romanian earthquakes was used for this study. In the present paper, the procedure was applied for the last three intermediate-depth earthquakes with Mw>5.0 occurred on September 23, 2016, December 27, 2016 and February 8, 2017 in Vrancea area, and felt on the extra-Carpathian. The purpose of this study is to compare the intensities computed with a formula with those values manual estimated, to see how reliable are the fast evaluations and if they could be used as responses for insurance companies.
