Abstract: Experimental methods used in this paper – Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) and Inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) can help in monitoring in the Northern Atlantic nuclear discharges. The discharges can be related to nuclear fuel reprocessing plants at Sellafield (GB) and La Hague (F), because these determine the contamination in Europe produced after the Cernobyl accident, and, recently, measure the pollution caused by the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident. The accident has caused Pacific Ocean contamination, as well as environment contamination, in air and soil over extended geographic areas.
An adequate choice to monitor the contamination due to the discharge of fission products into the environment is the isotope of 129I because it is a fission product of uranium and plutonium and is therefore a good indicator of nuclear discharges into the environment. Thanks to its long lifetime, it can be used as a tracer and pollution indicator for extremely long periods of time.
To determine very low concentrations the following experimental methods have been used, mainly: Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) and inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The first method has the ability to measure directly every atom existing in a sample, one by one and the second method, can determine the quantity of stable isotope in used samples.
