Abstract:
This work presents the use of thin polyaniline films deposited by plasma polymerization in order to decrease the response rate of nematic liquid crystal cells (NLCC). Polyaniline films were deposited using a DC plasma polymerization reactor with variable geometry. By altering the deposition parameters, the morphological properties of the films suffer important modifications. These new topological features, combined with structural modification like crystalline structure modifications can have a huge impact on electrical conduction proprieties, influencing the response time. The electro-optical response time is measured by exposing the NLCC to a He-Ne 633nm polarized laser beam and measuring the evolution from min to max of the light intensity when changing the applied voltage. Asymmetric NLCCs with polyaniline films were used and exhibit a charge capacitor like propriety where the liquid crystal molecules are aligned faster in comparison with cells made without the thin polymeric film.
