Abstract:
In the cases where the energy bands are degenerate or nearly degenerate the Berry curvature becomes a matrix with non-Abelian gauge structure [1, 2]. The semiclassical theory that describes the non-degenerate energy bands needs to be requantized to turn the wavepacket energy into an effective quantum Hamiltonian. The anomalous spin Hall effect [3] is pedagogically discussed in this context.
