Abstract:
Electron beams produced by the ALID-7 linear accelerator were used to investigate optical fibers to determine their viability as a radiation dosimeter. The optical fibers that were used in the study have a pure silica core or are doped with different elements. This study is based on the physical degradation effect of the optical fiber due to electron beam exposure. This effect can be determined through the measurement of radiation induced attenuation that is proportional to the exposure dose. The measurements show a dependence of the radiation induced attenuation to the exposure dose. Radiation induced attenuation in the optic fiber was measured before, during and after electron beam exposure and for two wavelength values. Optical fibers present different responses, regarding attenuation values, when exposed to the same radiation doses, dependent on the core doping materials. While some optic fibers reached saturation of the attenuation values, others required a much larger irradiation dose or were not influenced at all.
