Abstract:
To the purpose of studying the technical problems that arise in the conception of a sensor array for a level 4 autonomous vehicle, a model is constructed, represented by the scale prototype of this paper. All the functions and mechanism are simplified in order to tackle the main issues that arise and not get bogged down into too fine a granularity of problem solving. Using and Arduino development platform, a simple set of motors and drivers and a Garmin Lite Lidar v3 lidar sensor using a I2C connection, the prototype has proven a quick build. During the paper, several real life tests have been conducted based on the most important values that affect the accuracy of the signal: Distance to target, Target dimensions, Target aspect, reflectivity. Registering a mean value of 5000 measurements per position, the recorded data has been processed to eliminate errors using several techniques, and the final data has been analyzed to help conclude of a better usage of a LIDAR sensor in an autonomous vehicle sensor matrix. The conclusion are in relation to a previous prototype using IR sensors for target distance measurement. It was shown that different types of reflective surfaces , water and a high humidity have a great impact on the errors of measurement , making the sensor insufficient as an only methods of distance measuring for the automotive market.
