Abstract:
The paper describes a new method of synthesis for a composite material based on Ag and SiO2 nanoparticles to induce antimicrobial properties in superhydrophobic coatings. The SiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized via sol-gel method, while the silver nanoparticles were reduced with peppermint essential oil (acts both as reducing agent and stabilizing compound). The synthesis is carried out at room temperature , using water and alcohol as solvents. The composite is a biohybrid compound, aimed to induce both an antimicrobial activity and water repellant properties, to surfaces likely to develop microbiota (brick, wood, plaster and clothing).
