Abstract:
In 1971 G.F.R. Ellis conjectured that, in general relativistic context, the kinematic quantities of a perfect fluid must obey the following exact result: if the shear of a barotropic fluid is zero then the fluid cannot both rotate and expand. The talk will survey recent developments towards the proof of this conjecture highlighting the linear equation of state case (including a non-zero cosmological constant), and few recent results in the general barotropic case.
