Abstract:
Starting from the first pile invented in 1799 by Alessandro Volta, batteries have become a human ally, not only because of their capacity of sustaining physical and chemical processes, using their reservers, but lately because of their new purpose, of substituting other ways, which are more harmful for our ecological system, of producing or retaining energy. Alkalines, silver-oxides, lead-acides, rechargable alkalines or nickel-cadmium - their evolution is not only sustaining a higher capacity of retaining electrical power, but more reliable ways to support continuous functioning of new eco-technologies like solar panels, wind turbines & other systems. Considering that, our concern is : how "eco" is the proces itself, of producing, recycling and in the end - disposing what's left of the batteries. Li-ion 18650 - is an example of battery type which, due to its evolution, is pushing the recycling concept to a new direction. Using the second life of this battery serves more than one purpose : the amount of disposed 18650 batteries is huge, and the cost for re-using is virtually zero, and besides the comercial side, let's not forget, how many dangerous substances we can prevent from reaching the nature, and at the same time saving new resources for being used in the process of producing something that has already been produced. The backup light-bulb using 18650 recycled batteries is just an example of this process.
