Abstract:
The distribution of the local molecular director of a liquid crystal describes the complicated molecular organization inside a liquid crystal cell. That arises from the competition between nematic order that strongly depends on temperature, boundary conditions determined by the anchoring of the molecules and eventually their orientation in external electric fields. In the end, the optical properties of a liquid crystal cell depend on the orientation of molecules, making them suitable or not for use in liquid crystals display technologies. By means of computer simulations, we investigated molecular orientation of liquid crystal molecules in presence of electric field for both planar and homeotropic anchoring at various temperatures. The results were used to predict the optical behaviour of the liquid crystal cell in the presence of an electric field that competes with the boundary conditions.
