Abstract:
In the space applications business, the demand for lighter weight and higher strength materials, which can outstand the harsh environmental conditions, is on the rise. Nanocomposites represent promising materials due to the possibility of an excellent combination of properties. There are several methods which can be used for their fabrication, but besides that, their testing and characterisations can be challenging and have to be rigorously done. Determining the particle distribution in the material, the microstructure, the hardness, the density, tensile properties are ways which can help to elucidate the strengthening of the nanocomposites and their suitability in applications used in the extreme environment. The present study focuses on the state-of-the-art on the possibility of producing hermetic packaging for space applications using nanocomposites and the description the material testing and characterization suitable for extreme environmental conditions.
