Abstract: The aim of this paper is to present the results of two meteorological software projects, one for the automatically detection and tracking of cyclones and the other for displaying meteorological fields in a more intuitive manner. The detection and tracking algorithm is based on the CCI (Calculus Cyclone Identification) method, developed by Benestad et al. (2006). The visualization method is using the wind speed and direction, on the two horizontal axis, overlaid over different meteorological parameters in order to create extremely intuitive maps. To exemplify the way that the two methods work, a case of heavy snowfall and high wind speeds associated with a Mediterranean cyclone over Romania was chosen. The CCI method, used to identify and track the cyclone from December 2014, uses as input data MSLP (Mean Sea Level Pressure) fields from ECMWF (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts). The visualization interface also uses meteorological fields from ECMWF. These two software prove to be both useful and modern tools, their usefulness being for operational forecasting and also for introducing physical and meteorological phenomena to beginners.
