Abstract:
The goal of the study is to identify the dominant modes of the global precipitation field variability over the 1901-2016. In order to do this, the Empirical Orthogonal Method is applied to annual and seasonal averages of the precipitation field from the CRU TS4.01 data set. The results emphasize the global spatial structures of two important climate modes: the global warming (GW) and the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO). Although both modes are associated with a significant predictability potential resulting from their trend-like and oscillatory nature, together they explain only 12% of variance in the global precipitation field. It is likely that the global precipitation patterns associated with these two modes will continue to manifest in the next decades.
