Abstract: Neurotransmitters are biological components which facilitate the transmission of electrical signals between neurons and play an important role in the exchange of information between the brain and body. Variation in the production or metabolism of the neurotransmitters has been linked to different mental disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, schizophrenia, epilepsy, and paranoia. There is an increased need for the development of a fast and cheap type of sensor that can detect analytes in the biological matrix, without other purification and isolation steps. In the present study, we focus on the development and characterization of a screen-printed sensor based on CNTs functionalized with metalloporphyrins for the identification of certain neurotransmitters (dopamine, serotonin, and epinephrine). The sensors showed high sensibility and a fast response time towards neurotransmitters due to an electron-transfer reaction mechanism.
