Abstract:
We revisit the problem of the motion of an electron under the influence of an external force. The motion being accelerated, it is accompanied by the emission of electromagnetic radiation, effect which modifies the motion itself. We describe recently obtained results for the total momentum and energy of the electromagnetic field of the accelerated electron, for a spatial region excluding a vicinity of the electron and extending to infinity. A procedure is presented to treat the singularities of the results in the limit of the point electron and their partial covariance. Then we describe inferred expressions for the observables momentum and energy of the electron, leading, together with those corresponding to the emitted radiation, to an equation of motion of the electron that coincides, in the case of an external electromagnetic field, with the Lorentz-Dirac equation.
