Abstract:
Clouds represent the main cause of the divergence of future climate projections made with general circulation models. Understanding the processes that affect cloud formation is important for improving the projections. Since sea surface temperature (SST) is a critical factor for cloud formation, fingerprints of the main climate modes in total cloud cover (TCC) are identified in this study, by applying the method of Canonical Correlation Analysis to SST and TCC global fields. The results reveal two important processes linking the SST and TCC anomalies: the depp convection is key in the equatorial band, whereas heat transfer in the marine planetary boundary layer dominate in subtropics and in midlatitudes.
