Abstract: Palladium, platinum and rhodium are part of the platinum group metals (PGMs) and are widely used in the automotive industry, for exhaust gas treatment. Because there are no feasible alternatives, the importance of this type of metals in the automotive sector is constantly rising. That being said, the high value of PGMs used in automotive catalysts makes recycling a worthwhile process. The current techniques are energy consuming, require a temperature of above 1800 °C and pollute the environment during the process. Hydrometallurgical treatments of the used catalysts facilitate the recycling of the PGMs with less energy and time. In addition, the recycling of PGMs is very important from an environment point of view. It provides a supplementary source to the mining of these metals, therefore reducing the negative impact of the environment, by limiting the waste disposal and saving of natural resources. The aim of this study is to recover the quantity of PGMs usually found in such types of catalysts, by using modern electrochemical methods. For the physico-chemical properties, we use ICP-OES, UV-VIS and XRD techniques, while for the morphological properties, we use TEM.
