Spectral and microfluidic analyses of components of multiple emulsions

Abstract:
Emulsions are extensively studied due to their multiple applications in pharmaceutics, cosmetics, food industry, surfaces’ decontamination, enhanced oil recovery (EOR), etc. This study presents emulsions generated with a double syringe system starting from 1 mL of sodium tetradecyl sulfate salt (STS) 10 % solution in ultrapure deionized water and 1 mL of oily vitamin A, without adding any cosurfactant. The optimal ratio was chosen after a stability study of emulsions generated by Tessari method performed on three STS:oily vitamin A ratios. Optical microscopy allows to observe formation of multiple emulsions. The drop test method and fluorescence microscopy analyses determine if generated emulsions are O/W/O or W/O/W, where O means oil (oily vitamin A) and W represents water (STS 10 % solution in ultrapure deionized water) [1]. Optical microscopy was also employed to characterize the generated emulsions as a function of the number of mixing cycles. The effect of the laser radiation on the emulsions was studied, as well as the effect of irradiation on the emulsions’ components. The immiscible components of the emulsion were analyzed by UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, FTIR spectroscopy and surface tension characterization in pendant droplets. The reported studies allow to select the optimal parameters to generate multiple emulsions containing STS solution in water and oily vitamin A. These emulsions may be suitable for different applications, especially for medical ones, like formulating pharmaceutical carriers for targeted drug delivery.
