Abstract:
Phase change materials are extensively used in thermal energy storage and electronic thermal management due to their high latent heat. However, a major drawback is the low thermal conductivity which affects charging and discharging rates. A viable solution for increasing the heat transfer rate is to use additives with high thermal conductivity, such as graphene. Composite materials paraffin-graphene (1-10 wt.%) were obtained in a high shear mixer at 5000rpm and 90°C. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy images highlighted the homogeneous distribution of graphene sheets within the lamellar structure of paraffin. Thermal properties were investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry, such as phase change transition temperatures and latent heats. Experimental results showed a heat transfer rate of the composite materials up to 35% shorter than that of pure paraffin, without a significat decrease of latent heat.
