Abstract:
In carbon material research, thermal analysis in an important tool for understanding basic processes like carbonization of precursors, oxidation of carbonaceous materials, activation and surface functional groups. The information obtained through thermal analysis provides useful instructions for improving the functions and even developing new functions of carbon materials. In particular, thermogravimetric analysis (TG) of carbon materials allows the evaluation of decomposition, oxidation, or dehydration processes. Particular attention must be paid to operating parameters: instrument, heating rate, atmospheric gas, flow rate of the gas, sample mass, etc., as they can profoundly affect TG curve. We propose a detailed study of how to select the operating conditions according to the physical parameters to be studied. Furthermore, a comparative study was carried out on the theoretical models used to estimate the activation energy of the carbon black decomposition process.
