Abstract:
In neutrino oscillation experiments, precise measurement of neutrino oscillation parameters is of prime importance. More current and planned neutrino oscillation experiments operate in the 0.1-10 GeV energy range using liquid argon detectors as time projection chamber. At these energies, the neutrino cross section for neutrino nucleus interactions, the interactions of the pions or other particles in argon are not well understood or even the cross sections are missing. In these cases the nuclear effects, initial and final state interactions play a significant role and these aspects can generate inaccurate reconstruction of neutrino energy and cause uncertainty in the measurements of the cross sections. This contribution gives a pedagogical review of the problematic of the cross sections for the interactions of pions in argon for the energy range of interest. Particular attention is paid to the interaction mechanisms associated with pion absorption in nucleus, a process involving the simultaneous participation of several nucleons.
