Abstract:
To obtain more data on recent volcanic rocks concerning both texture and elemental chemical composition, a sample of Iceland vesicular basalt was investigated by computed tomography (CT), energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence analysis (EDX) and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). CT preliminary results evidenced a lacunar texture consisting of empty vesicles and multiple micro-fractures, EDX proved the dominance of Mg, Al, Si and Fe suggesting the presence of olivine while LA-ICP-MS showed the presence of a positive Eu anomaly. All these findings were in good agreement with the mafic character of recent basalts, close to the Atlantic Mid-Ocean Ridge Basalt (MORB), where the Iceland is situated.
