Abstract:
The dual-frequency satellites of the four major Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and BeiDou) allow for the measurement of the total electron content of the ionosphere (TEC) using the observables and associated navigation files provided in e.g. RINEX format by dedicated ground receiving stations. The ionosphere TEC is mainly influenced by solar activity, and as such it serves as a proxy of the latter. It is important to permanently have information about the status of the TEC since any drastic changes of the electron density in the ionosphere may lead to disruptions as severe as complete signal loss of the satellite transmission. This presentation details the procedure required to determine the TEC values from all the different GNSS networks, and presents the TEC first results obtained for the GPS constellation. The procedure will be later integrated, after more processing and refinement, in an ionospheric activity monitoring system developed and hosted by the Institute of Space Science and the National Institute for Earth Physics.
