Abstract: Radio signals coming from the Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou and Galileo) may suffer rapid and intensive fluctuations in amplitude and phase as they pass through the small‐scale plasma density irregularities in the ionosphere, on their way to ground receiving stations. These fluctuations are called radio scintillations and they are described by two indices, namely S4, representing the amplitude fluctuation and σφ, representing the phase fluctuation of a GNSS signal received by a ground station. It is essential to permanently monitor these scintillations, as they can seriously alter the satellite signal transmission, leading to poor communication between the satellites and ground stations or even permanent loss of the satellite signal lock. This presentation describes our current work on computing the S4 and σφ indices using GPS data in RINEX format provided by ground stations located across the territory of Romania.
