Abstract: Nowadays, the rapid progress registered in the area of materials science and engineering has created outstanding opportunities for modern medicine by generate the premises of developing new and enhanced materials with impressive properties. Recently, tremendous efforts were made in the area of engineered particles to find an efficient route of synthesis for obtaining nanoparticles functionalized with biocompatible polymers. One of the most studies inorganic materials for their distinguished properties are iron oxide nanoparticles. This study reports the synthesis by and adapted coprecipitation method, and the characterization of novel iron oxide nanoparticles functionalized with polyvinyl alcohol (FexOy-APV) for biomedical applications. The structure and morphology of the obtained nanopowders were investigated by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The results indicated that the FexOy-APV nanoparticles presented a homogenous spherical morphology. Furthermore, the in vitro evaluation regarding the cytotoxicity of the samples illustrated that the particles do not exhibit any toxicity against the tested HeLa cells. The results obtained in this study revealed that the obtained iron oxide nanoparticles functionalized with polyvinyl alcohol (FexOy-APV) making them suitable for being used in biomedical applications.
