Abstract: Due to the progress made in the industrial sector in present days, the abundance of heavy metals contaminants in groundwaters, wastewaters and soils has become a worldwide problem. The presence of metals such as Pb, As, Cr, Cd, Zn, Ni, Pu, Co, Cu, Sb, U, and V has toxic effects for human health and for the environmental fauna and flora. In this context, the legal standards on environmental safety and control are continuously changing and becoming more restrictive in order to try to attenuate the spread of contaminants in the environment. The recent advances in nanotechnology have allowed the development of numerous processes that can be used for removing heavy metals from contaminated water such as precipitation, ultrafiltration, ion exchange, phytoextraction, etc. Moreover, recently the use of alternative technologies involving low-cost materials as potential adsorbents for the removal of heavy metals have been proposed by the scientific community. One of the most interesting material used as adsorbent due to its high affinity towards metal ions is hydroxyapatite (HAp) and has been extensively studied. The aim of this study, was the synthesis and characterization of novel polyvinyl alcohol coated hydroxyapatite (HAp-APV) for zinc ions removal from water. The HAp-APV nanocomposite’s morphology was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and their elemental composition by Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The SEM results revealed the nanometric size of the HAp-APV nanoparticles and the approximately round shape morphology. The ability of HAp-APV nanocomposites to adsorb zinc ions from aqueous solutions were established by batch experiments. The results of the kinetic and equilibrium studies on the removal of Zn (II) from aqueous solutions using HAp-APV nanocomposites emphasized that these materials have a strong affinity towards zinc ions and could be for the development of novel ecological remediation strategies.
