Abstract: In the last years, the recent advances in the field of materials science and bionanotechnology have shaped the medical field. Researchers worldwide have gone to great lengths to improve the quality of life for patients by developing new and enhanced functionalized materials. The most studied materials for these purposes are hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (HAp) for their biocompatible properties as well as iron oxide nanoparticles (IO). Due to their unique properties, HAp and IO are excellent candidates for biomedical applications. This study reports the synthesis, characterization and the biological evaluation by in vitro and in vivo assays of hydroxyapatite/iron oxide nanocomposites functionalized with antitumor agent, 5-Flurouracil, in a dextran matrix (HAp/IO-5Flu-Dx). The morphology of the HAp/IO-5Flu-Dx obtained by an adapted co-precipitation method was investigated by scanning electron microcopy (SEM) and their elemental analysis by Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The SEM studies have shown that the synthesized particles present a spherical morphology and nanometric size. Moreover, the EDX analysis revealed the presence of all the constitutive elements of HAp, IO, 5-Fluorouracil and dextran. The results of the in vitro and in vivo assays have shown that the HAp/IO-5Flu-Dx nanoparticles are non-toxic and biocompatible proving a huge potential to be used in the next generation of diagnostic and therapeutic agents. Furthermore, the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic agents based on HAp/IO-5Flu-Dx nanoparticles will have great impact in improving the survival rate and the quality of life for many cancer patients.
