Abstract:
The main aim of the Residential Assignment is to promote skills and confidence by pursuing a comprehensive nuclear forensic examination in the real time-frame (2months). This year, the program, hosted by the Centre for Energy Research’s Nuclear Forensics Laboratory - Budapest, was structured based on a hypothetical seizure of a real fuel pellet. As participant I had the chance to pass through all the steps regarding a nuclear forensics examination: from radiological crime scene investigation until the origin assessment using the National Nuclear Forensics Library (NNFL) system of Hungary. The unknown sample, seized outside of regulatory control was analyzed under controlled conditions using different techniques and methods as physical characterization in a glove box, high resolution gamma ray spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-Ray Diffraction and Mass Spectrometry. The lesson-learned and best practices during this program as well as the results will be presented.
