Abstract:
In this study it was investigated the synoptical and local scale processes and interactions that led to a late extreme winter event in the second decade of April, 2017 that is the most important such event in the last few decades. The aim is to identify the triggering forcing elements, characterize the climate context in which these triggers act together by defining specific indices and validate these over a statistically significant data base of observed such events (30 years of GFS model analysis). It was performed model simulations to assess the effective role of the main dynamical and thermodynamic triggers. Dynamical tropopause fold, jet stream and all surface processes induced by the vicinity of the Black Sea, Mediterranean latent heat supply and the mountains coupled to produce this event.
