Abstract: The aim of this research is to investigate correlations between PM10 and PM2.5 mass concentrations and statistical indicators (gross domestic product, inhabitants’ number, vital statistics-life expectancy) across Romania because, to the best of our knowledge, a lack of research exists regarding the relationships between air pollutants and socio-economic indicators.
The research involves the statistical analysis of several PM10 and PM2.5 datasets of emissions (extracted from WebDab of EMEP) and collocated high-resolved (daily, by geographical coordinates) atmospheric observations PM (from European air quality database) with socio-economic indicators. Timeseries cover the period from 2016 back to 2000.
At the country scale, results indicate a strong direct correlation (above 0.60) between air pollution level and gross domestic product and inhabitants’ number. This research answers to questions of both scientific and socio-economic importance and suggests the necessity of additional investigations on the link between air pollution data and economic indicators by development region, in order to help the decision takers to develop abatement pollution strategies at the country scale combined with regional measures.

Emission gridded data were extracted from WebDab, Present state of emissions as used in EMEP models; http://www.ceip.at/webdab_emepdatabase/emissions_emepmodels, accessed in August 2018.
The ground-based data were extracted from the public available European Air Quality Database,
