Abstract: Strange quark matter (SQM) is a hypothetical type of matter composed of almost equal quantities of up, down and strange quarks. More than three decades ago, E. Witten stated that SQM could be the ground state of hadronic matter. Lumps of SQM may have survived as relics of the Big Bang or as debris of supernovae and may contribute to the cold dark matter content in the Universe. Nuclearites are massive SQM cosmic particles, that could reach the Earth with non-relativistic velocities (~250 km/s). We review the properties of nuclearites, the detection
methods and the results of experimental searches, focusing on MACRO, SLIM and ANTARES experiments. Prospective experiments such as KM3NeT, JUNO and JEM-EUSO will also be discussed.
