Abstract: Despite continuos development of numerical weather prediction systems nowadays, forecasts are prone to errors. A solution for this shortcoming may be the calibration of a model direct output by means of statistical post-processing. Thus, a bias-correction method was applied to wind speed data obtained from the limited area model ALARO (Aire Limitée Adaptation/Application de la Recherche à l'Opérationnel). Typical bias correction methods need appropiate observational data. Wind speed values measured at synoptic national weather stations in Romania were used in this study. The results were evaluated for the year 2016, at six sites in Romania with different local characteristics. Statistical scores showed that the calibration of a numerical weather prediction model output is beneficial for the wind speed forecast, especially for high altitude stations. Monthly averaged differences between the raw and calibrated wind speed data were evaluated separately for daytime and nighttime, showing distinct pattern for each station.
