Abstract:
Platinum is the electrocatalyst of choice in a wide range of electrochemical energy devices. Platinum has a high activity towards the oxygen reduction reaction and it is electrochemically stable in the water potential window. It’s widely used in industries, such as automotive, medicine and electronics, and has very limited availability. As a result, the recycling of platinum has become a top priority in the last few years [1]. Recycling using traditional methods requires energy intensive equipment (temperatures higher than 2000 0C) and involves the use of acids at high concentrations, thus having a negative impact on the environment [2]. Halide ions are known to have high affinity towards platinum. In this work electrochemical dissolution of platinum at different pH values in chloride containing electrolytes was studied. ICP - OES was used to determine the dissolution rate. UV-Vis was used to determine the structure of the platinum complex. It was found that the largest dissolution rates were achieved at acidic pH. This work shows the role of the pH on the dissolution rate and on the chemical structure of the platinum complex.
