Abstract:
Bioelectrochemical systems (BES) make use of the microorganism’s ability to generate electrons that can be subsequently used in different electrochemical reactions. There are two types of BES: (1) microbial fuel cells in which power is generated and (2) microbial electrosynthesis cells in which chemicals can be produced. The bioelectrochemical activity of microorganisms plays a key role in choosing the application. Bioelectrochemical activity can be determined by measuring the change in redox potential of biological medium. An accurate and reproductive measure of the redox potential is essential in characterizing BES. This work compares the redox potential of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 measured in a one and two-compartment electrochemical setup. This work shows that a higher redox potential value is measured by one-compartment electrochemical cells. A two-compartment electrochemical setup can offer a clearer view on the culture state of growth while delivering less accurate redox potential values.
